Music has a magical ability to transport us into another world, and when it comes to the enchanting Efteling theme park, the compositions of Ruud Bos are undeniably iconic. Over the years, his music has shaped the atmosphere of various Efteling attractions, and two of his masterpieces, Fata Morgana and Villa Volta, stand out as some of the most memorable.

20 years ago, I reached out to Ruud Bos with a proposal: to create arrangements of his music for wind ensembles and fanfare orchestras. I was thrilled to receive his permission, and with that, I was able to craft new versions of these two compositions for wind bands. With the support of Molenaar Edition, a renowned music publishing company, these arrangements were published, bringing Ruud Bos’s music to a wider audience and allowing musicians to bring his music to life in new ways.

Last year, I received an unexpected call from Ruud Bos’s son, Ruud Jan Bos. He shared with me his plans sinds his father past away to preserve and showcase his father’s musical legacy, in the first place focusing on the Efteling compositions that where arranged for wind orchestras. Ruud Jan also had the idea to re-record these works with the prestigious Marinierskapel of the Royal Netherlands Navy Band.

This project was a remarkable opportunity to revise and refine the arrangements I had made years ago. Together with Henk Ummels from Molenaar Edition, we went over the existing versions and made improvements where necessary. Over the past two decades, my experience with wind orchestras has grown, what made it possible to incorporate new insights into these arrangements. Many of the original pieces had been crafted from CD by ear, but now, with access to the original scores, I was able to refine the music and correct any previous inaccuracies. The result is a more polished and most faithful representation of the beautiful works of Ruud Bos.

The final recordings of these arrangements, performed by the Marinierskapel, for this project conducted bij Jos Pommer, have been released, and they are truly spectacular. It’s incredible to see how Ruud Jan’s vision came to life, paying tribute to his father’s legacy with such dedication. I have great respect and am thankful for the hard work and passion that Ruud Jan put into making this project a reality.
