From Shadow to Light is an expressive and narrative composition that depicts a journey from darkness to hope in four connected sections. The music begins heavy and tormented, filled with inner struggle and tension, before breaking into a fierce and determined fight for escape. A moment of reflection and calm follows, allowing space for healing and understanding, after which new strength emerges. The work concludes with a confident, hopeful march, leading to a powerful and uplifting finale. From Shadow to Light tells a compelling story of perseverance, resilience, and finding new beginnings through determination and trust.

The piece opens with Défilé d'Entrée, a cheerful, quick march where something feels off, as if a step is being skipped here and there. This leads into Magicien Ennuyeux, a waltz depicting the dull and clumsy magician performing his tricks. Pierrot Triste captures the melancholy of the sad clown, followed by Acrobates Maladroits, where the awkward acrobats perform clumsy stunts in a very special mambo. Finally, everything culminates in Animaux Incontrôlables, where circus animals wreak havoc, tearing down the tent in a fast-paced, challenging Csárdás. It’s typical, vivid circus music with a challenging and humorous twist. For the fast and difficult passage in the woodwinds at the end of the piece, there is an alternative, easier version available.

Instrumentation: Solo C - Trumpet & Fanfare Band

Duration: Ca. 13,00 min.

Difficulty: Grade 5

Anton Weeren wrote this virtuoso Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra for Jeroen Schippers, solo trumpet player of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. This work had its world premiere with Jeroen Schippers and his orchestra in November 2022. The premiere of the fanfare version took place at the Gelders Fanfare Orchestra. It is a challenging work for both the soloist and the orchestra in which the concerto style typically emerges. Overall, this piece consists of an opening, five subsequent and based movements, and a solo cadence.

David Kweksilber, the composer of this piece, has listened to a lot of historical Klezmer recordings by Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras. As an instrumentalist, he also took lessons with virtuosos such as David Krakauer and Andy Statman. The character and sound of Klezmer serve as inspiration within Kweksilber's own compositions. This resulted in Klezz of '99 at the end of the '90s, which he premiered with the New Cool Collective Big Band in a groovy, danceable context. Anton Weeren has made this masterful piece available for wind and fanfare orchestra, which can be performed with or without a combo. David Kweksilber enjoys participating as a soloist during performances of this super fun piece.
